Knowledge Cafe 43: Rethinking the KM Landscape: From Transactional to Relational KM across North and South

What shapes the knowledge that drives our decisions?

What if relationships, trust, and lived experience were given the same weight as transactional systems, metrics and measurable results?

Across our work, many of us are navigating a tension between:

These approaches coexist, sometimes complementing each other… sometimes competing. The overall landscape shows that KM is increasingly shaped by what can be measured, while the relational side of KM is being pushed aside. It is harder to quantify; it is less visible to senior management and often undervalued in decision-making. And yet, this relational side of KM may be more critical than ever.

What if we created a space to pause, reflect, and talk openly about how we really practice Knowledge Management today?

This conversation is part of a broader reflection on the KM Landscape as a global discipline and how we shape it through our everyday practices. Do they look different depending on where we sit, our contexts, and our experiences across the Global North and Global South.

In this Knowledge Café, you will:

  • Exchange perspectives across Global North and Global South contexts
  • Reflect on the growing dominance of transactional KM
  • Explore what we risk losing when relational KM is sidelined
  • Learn how others are navigating this tension
  • Contribute to a collective reflection on the KM Landscape

And you, what do you think?
Do you want to be part of this collective endeavour?

Join us. Bring your experience, your questions, your perspective.

We look forward to sharing this space with you!
